What’s a “lactation consultant” and why would I need one?
Hi, I’m Miri: Nurse and your new ally in breastfeeding and respectful parenting
👋 Hello again! I’m Miri, a nurse specialised in breastfeeding. You’ve probably landed here thinking: what’s a “lactation consultant” and why would I need one?
If you’re pregnant or have a newborn, chances are you’ve been flooded with all sorts of “essential” information for being a mum. And when you open the famous can of worms called ✨ breastfeeding ✨, you think: “Well, I just need a baby, a boob, and a hungry tummy, right?” And yes, in theory that’s all… but reality can be a bit more complicated. Sometimes little bumps —or big boulders— get in the way. That’s where I come in, to help make breastfeeding what it should be: a beautiful, connected, pain-free moment (and so those bumps don’t become a wall).
I work with you at two key moments:
- Before your baby is born (antenatal sessions): I give you clear, honest info about what to expect with breastfeeding. It’s not always perfect, but there’s no need to panic either. You’ll be prepared for the good, the not-so-good, and when to ask for help fast. If everything goes smoothly, you’ll send me adorable pictures and we’ll melt together. And if challenges pop up, you call me and we sort it together.
- When you’re already in it (postnatal sessions): Pain, cracks, breasts ready to explode…? I’ll assess you and your baby to offer practical solutions and walk this road with you. I don’t just focus on the physical — I listen (yes, even if you just need to vent), support you, and offer a judgment-free space where you can express how you feel and be understood.
I’m not just the “expert” with technical advice — I’m the one who gets it when you want to cry, laugh, or say things that aren’t always politically correct. Because motherhood is wild, wonderful, exhausting… and I’m here to make sure you don’t feel alone.
In short, I’m here to guide you with honesty, care and knowledge so this intense chapter is also full of love and learning. Every family is different, and I keep training to give you the best support possible. So if you want to know more or just chat about breastfeeding, I’m right here.
💛 Sending you a big warm (virtual) hug,
Miri
